1. Why you need a “used” address
- AML screening analyses the transaction history of a specific address.
- A “fresh” address has no history, so the screening result will be empty.
- For a report or exchange you need an address that has already received your bitcoin and from which you plan to spend them.
2. Why does your wallet show so many addresses? (tech in brief)
Modern wallets follow BIP-32/44: from one seed phrase they generate an “infinite” chain of addresses.
- Every time you press “Receive,” the wallet issues a new external address (path
…/0/N) to enhance privacy. - Change from your transactions goes to change addresses (
…/1/N) that are often hidden in the interface. - On recovery, the wallet scans addresses until it meets 20 consecutive empty ones (gap limit). If your coins are beyond that, they stay invisible until you raise the limit.
- Your balance lives not in a single “account,” but as UTXO—unspent outputs scattered across those addresses.
3. How to quickly locate an address with inbound funds
| Wallet | Steps | What to copy |
|---|---|---|
| Ledger Live (desktop) | Accounts → Bitcoin → Receive → Used addresses tab | An address marked Used with a non-zero balance |
| Trust Wallet / Exodus (mobile) | Receive → BTC → “History” icon | An address showing an incoming payment or balance |
| Electrum / Sparrow (desktop) | Addresses tab → sort by Balance | Double-click → Copy address |
Tip: If you only see an “empty” address, open the “History” or “Used” section, or enable change addresses in the settings.

6. Frequently asked questions
| Question | Answer (brief) |
|---|---|
| May I send my seed or xPub? | No — we only need a single address. Keep your seed offline. |
| The balance “disappeared.” What now? | Make sure the wallet is synced; if needed, raise the gap limit to 50. |
| Can I change the address after screening? | Preferably not: the report is tied to that exact address. Screen the one you’ll actually spend from. |
7. Short checklist
- Locate an address in your wallet with a non-zero balance.
- Check it via AML Bot | mexm.io or send it to us.
- Get a “clean” report — and proceed with the exchange!
Bottom line: Understanding HD addresses and a quick check via AML Bot | mexm.io lets you prove your funds are clean and speeds up the exchange. Follow the steps above and no satoshi will be “lost” on the way to your deal.
