Features of the Cryptocurrency systеm

Most people encountering the phenomenon of cryptocurrency for the first time wonder how Bitcoin works. While there is information available online, much of it is highly technical. Let’s try to explain the essence of the systеm in simple terms.

Bitcoin: How It Was Created, What It Is, and Why It Has Value

Bitcoin is both a digital currency and an electronic payment systеm for conducting transactions. Today, it is used alongside the dollar and euro for online purchases. Notably, Bitcoin’s use is limited to the Internet since it lacks a physical form. One of its defining characteristics is decentralization—there are no intermediaries between the currency owner and the digital assets themselves. In contrast, traditional payment methods require users to open accounts with banks or electronic payment systems (EPS), which set transaction conditions and charge substantial service fees. In Bitcoin’s systеm, no one has the authority to “freeze” an account or pause a payment, as is often practiced by banks.

The release of Bitcoins is carried out by network participants who use specialized equipment to mine it. Mining involves solving complex mathematical problems. Therefore, Bitcoin’s value is based not on ties to precious metals or the authority of an issuing institution but on mathematical laws. These laws cannot be changed by decisions of a regulator or government. The systеm’s algorithm is openly accessible, allowing anyone to review its functionality.

The creator of Bitcoin is a brilliant programmer known by the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. He published an article describing the potential of an electronic payment systеm based on mathematical principles. The algorithm predetermines the rate of new coin issuance, which halves every four years. The last Bitcoin will be mined around 2140. The maximum number of Bitcoins is limited to 21 million. This is tiny compared to the quantity of traditional currency units. However, each Bitcoin is divisible into one hundred million parts, called “Satoshis” in honor of Bitcoin’s creator.

Features of the First Cryptocurrency

Bitcoin has certain characteristics that set it apart from traditional currencies:

  • It is decentralized. In other words, the systеm has no central authority, and the network consists of numerous computers worldwide, whose power is used for mining.
  • Accessibility. Unlike fiat money, Bitcoin is easy to use. Simply install a Bitcoin client and create a new address—a process that takes no more than five minutes. By contrast, opening a bank or EPS account involves a laborious procedure filled with bureaucratic formalities.
  • Anonymity. Bitcoin addresses have no links to users’ personal information.
  • Transparency. All network participants can access the blockchain, a public history of transactions. However, no one can determine the owner of a particular wallet unless the user discloses this information.
  • Low fees. An international bank transfer can be costly, whereas Bitcoin transactions typically incur a nominal fee, just a few cents.
  • Speed. Just minutes after a transfer, its details are available to network participants.
  • Irreversible transactions. Users cannot reverse a Bitcoin transfer, except when the recipient agrees to return the funds.

In conclusion, Bitcoin’s systеm today offers numerous advantages over traditional currency units as well as other types of cryptocurrencies.
